Class B Air Conditioning Contractor Licensing Description
A “class B air-conditioning contractor” means a contractor whose services are limited to 25 tons of cooling and 500,000 BTU of heating in any one system in the execution of contracts requiring the experience, knowledge, and skill to install, maintain, repair, fabricate, alter, extend, or design central air-conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilating systems, including duct work in connection with a complete system. A “class B air-conditioning contractor” shall not perform any work such as liquefied petroleum or natural gas fuel lines within buildings, potable water lines or connections, sanitary sewer lines, swimming pool piping and filters, or electrical power wiring. To obtain a Class B Air Conditioning license the candidate must, in addition to passing the Business and Finance Exam, pass an 85 question exam with a time limit of 5 hours.
The Mechanical, Air A and Air B Contractor exam prep course is the same for all three exams. The manuals are the same, the exam questions are very similar, without regard to commercial versus residential applications. All of the exam prep schools that I am aware of, including mine, teach them as one course. The only difference in that the Mechanical Contractor will need to be familiar with two more manuals, the NFPA 99 and the Florida Building Code-Fuel Gas.
