General Contractor Licensing Description
A “general contractor” means a contractor whose services are unlimited as to the type of work which he or she may do in regard to construction; whose services are unlimited limited in regard to the construction of commercial buildings and single-dwelling or multiple-dwelling residential buildings. These buildings can be unlimited in height and size. A general contractor may also construct the “accessory use structures” in connection with these buildings. An accessory use structure would be a garage, guest house, garden shed, or other outbuildings. A general contractor is also a contractor whose services are unlimited in regard to remodeling, repair, or improvement of any size building even if the services affect the structural elements of the building. To obtain a Florida General Contractor license the candidate must, in addition to passing the Business and Finance Exam, pass two additional trade exams; Contract administration which is 65 questions to be completed in 4.5 hours and Project Management which is also 65 questions and to be completed in 4.5 hours.
The General, Building and Residential Contractor exam prep course is the same for all three exams. The manuals are the same, the exam questions are very similar, with a possible emphasis on more commercial questions on the General or Builder, but all of the information in all of the reference manuals for all three exams is fair game. All of the exam prep schools that I am aware of teach them as one course.
